50% off sale at bbe music

January 12, 2009 by ksolo
Filed under music, shopping & deals

BBE Music just announced their half-off sale for all physical (read:non-MP3) music available at their site.

BBE is a UK-based music collective that includes several artists in what I call the ‘alternative soul’ genre. These artists run the gamut from vocal soul to funky jazz and house grooves. BBE stands for ‘Barely Breaking Even’, which is a testament to their dedication to bringing their listeners a quality listening experience without being solely motivated by commercial success. You might remember one of their artists (Slakah the Beatchild) that I recommended a while back.

So check ‘em out and support these purveyors of real music. I know I definitely need some new tunes for the ‘09, so I just finished placing my order. Only wish I didn’t have to wait for it to make its way across the pond….

Speaking of which, all the prices on the site are listed in GBP. So here’s a handy link to help you convert pounds to dollars.

new year’s house mix from Michael Alan

I’m grooving and working right now to a house mix from one of Atlanta’s premier house DJs – Michael Alan of Sweat.

The mix is entitled Jus’ SpeakN and is chock-full of spiritually uplifting tracks and hip-shaking beats, just what I needed to get me back into the post-holiday swing of things.

Oh, and I absolutely LOVE the track that comes in around 21:00. Niiice.

Check it out for yourself:

Yeah, I know. It’s not quite quitting time yet. But the rain has me distracted from my work, so why don’t you join me for a few random thoughts?

labor day weekend – help a sista out

Wow…is it really already Labor Day weekend?

August has been an absolute whirlwind! Started out the month with a trip to Panama (Central America, not Florida), just got back home from a work trip to Orlando and Miami (yeah, I know it sounds sexy, but believe me, there was nothing but work going on the whole time), and now i’m just getting settled in McRae for a weekend at the Songwriter’s Soul Kitchen hosted by Vinx. Only been here a couple of hours, and my head is spinning from the amount of talent that’s converged on brother Vinx’s house for the weekend. Everyone is so humble but so powerfully gifted in his / her own way, and open to learning from each other and sharing that love that is absolutely essential for creation… this is master-level education for artists of any kind. I feel very blessed to be here.

On the flip side, though, it was hard as hell leaving ATL this weekend. There’s so much good goodness going on that I’m gonna miss out on, so I’m relying on y’all to go and represent in my stead. Deal? Here’s your mission if you choose to accept it:

my current aural addiction

The gods of music have really been smiling on me as of late.

In the past few months, I’ve been engaging with more music heads, DJs, and just stumbling across a lot of new blogs and magazines that have helped me take my little music collection from respectable to downright formidable!

One recent gifting came from my new fam in Toronto, the lovely Gentle Aura, who gave me a copy of a Lars Behrenroth mix that has been in heavy rotation with me for the past few weeks. One track in particular, titled ‘Kissing Strangers’, seems to have irreversibly lodged itself in my brain.

It’s a classic, danceable house tune with an infectious mix by Frankie Feliciano, killer vocals from Monique Bingham, and a message that I’m sure all of us have related to at one point in our lives.

You can listen to the track on Imeem:

or download the entire Lars mix featuring Kissing Strangers at Deeper Shades of House.

Here’s to kisses you can feel!

When you hear the same 15 songs play in a seemingly endless loop on local radio stations and club mixes, the city’s more innovative DJs offer a welcome departure from the norm. Equal parts pied pipers, puppeteers and professors, these musical mixologists blend the new, the old, and the obscure not only in their selection of sounds, but also in the venues where they work their magic.
