Dutch National Opera & Ballet, Amsterdam

6 – 25 February 2020

The premiere of Frida by the Dutch National Ballet retells the story of one of the 20th century’s most enigmatic and intriguing painters: Frida Kahlo. Choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa delves deep into Kahlo’s haunting loneliness, her sexuality and her role as a champion of women’s rights. Celebrating the artist’s unique style, British composer Peter Salem incorporates Mexican instruments into his score, performed live by the Dutch Ballet Orchestra, while internationally acclaimed Dutch designer Dieuweke van Reij’s bright sets and costumes fully embrace the colour of Frida’s homeland. Full of passion, this story realises an image of bountiful creativity and power.
