William Blake: The Artist

Tate Britain, London
11 September 2019 – 2 February 2020

Loved today equally for his remarkable poems and his startling paintings and prints, in his own time William Blake endured neglect and incomprehension. Tate Britain sets the record straight with over 300 rarely seen works, from his only self-portrait to visionary illuminated books. Enlarged versions of Blake’s designs for vast unrealised frescoes will be projected on the gallery wall and Tate will re-stage his unsuccessful 1809 exhibition, hanging the original masterpieces in a recreation of Blake's family home. What better way to set the artist’s technical originality, political radicalism and passionate religious outlook in the context of his life in turbulent eighteenth-century London?
