Annie Baker’s slow-burning dramas have won the ultimate accolade: comparisons to Chekhov. Her plays are so subtle that they look just like life – whether it’s cleaners sweeping a cinema between screenings or amateur actors doing breathing exercises. Baker is a master at finding meaning in quiet moments and her latest, The Antipodes, is no different. Set in a TV writers’ room where creatives sit around shooting the breeze and summoning up stories out of thin air, it’s a story which excavates the whole endeavour of storytelling. In a world where content is king, Baker asks whether art has any value.
