Taivaanvalot

Wigmore Hall, London

30 September 2019

Taivaanvalot means ‘Heavenly Lights’ and the Finnish pianist-composer Olli Mustonen’s new symphony for tenor, cello and piano takes its text from the great Finnish national epic The Kalevala. And if that sounds daunting – well, between them, the cellist Steven Isserlis and the great British tenor Ian Bostridge can turn anything into urgent, communicative musical-drama. Mustonen himself plays the piano, and the evening begins with an exquisite selection of miniatures by Kurtág, Schuman, Schubert and – of course – the founding father of Finnish music, Jean Sibelius.
