We all know the story: the trail of sweets that leads to a gingerbread house. Hänsel und Gretel is primarily a tale of temptation, but German composer Engelbert Humperdinck has refashioned it to include a touch of social commentary, setting the Brothers Grimm classic against a backdrop of life on the breadline. So, when Hänsel and Gretel are packed off to pick berries to feed their poor family, can you blame them for tucking into the fairy tale feast they find in the forest? Set to an ingenious score that twists innocent childhood melodies into oppressive symphonies, Adrian Noble’s staging is a very sweet treat indeed.
