Porgy and Bess

The Metropolitan Opera, New York

23 September 2019 – 1 February 2020

George Gershwin never wrote anything quite like Porgy and Bess. Although it is packed with glorious melodies, this tale of hope and despair, set in the African-American community of the Charleston waterfront, is unquestionably an opera – possibly the Great American Opera. Shockingly, it hasn’t been seen at The Met in nearly 30 years, but this stylish and powerful new production became a word-of-mouth hit when it opened in London last season. With a superb cast (including Angel Blue as Bess) it deserves to take Manhattan by storm too.
