Velázquez, Rembrandt, Vermeer. Parallel visions

Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid

Until 29 September 2019

Much of the art historical effort has been devoted to marking the differences between the artistic traditions of Spain and Holland. This exhibition – a joint venture between the Rijksmuseum and the Prado – sets out instead to explore what they share, and how mutual admiration, as well as mutual competition, fuelled their separate evolution. Towering artists of the early to middle years of the seventeenth century, Velázquez, Rembrandt, Ribera and Vermeer are the primary focus – all painters working exactly at the time that Spain and Holland were in bitter conflict. A rare jewel of an exhibition.

Rembrandt van Rijn – Self-portrait, 1628

Johannes Vermeer – View of Houses in Delft, 1658
