Harper Lee’s literary classic has been a long time coming to London's stage. West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin's adaptation faced a lawsuit from the author's estate before it finally reached Broadway, where it broke box office records. Director Bartlett Sher stages the trial of Tom Robinson, a black man accused of rape, as if it were a story of America's very soul. In many ways it is: Lee's evisceration of southern racism remains horribly resonant 60 years on. Notting Hill's Rhys Ifans steps right out of his casting bracket to play the town's upstanding attorney, Atticus Finch.
