The Dante Project

Royal Opera House, London

6 May – 1 June 2020

A world premiere in three parts by Wayne McGregor. Renowned for redefining dance in the modern era, the Royal Opera House resident choreographer is bringing together an all-star team – including artist Tacita Dean and conductor-composer Thomas Adès – to recreate the most famous story in Italian literature. In Dante’s 14th century narrative poem, The Divine Comedy, the author travels from Hell, via Purgatory, to Heaven, guided by the Roman poet Virgil, and Dante’s lost beloved, Beatrice. This quest, with its rich narrative and romantic themes is startlingly visualised by McGregor, Dean and by Lighting Designer Lucy Carter, making it an ideal subject for ballet.
