Orlando’s time has well and truly come. Almost a century on, Virginia Woolf’s era-hopping, gender-swapping protagonist seems a very contemporary icon: a woman who, one day, wakes up a man – with all the social benefits it bestows. The magical realist tale is perfect fuel for feminist director Katie Mitchell, whose trademark brand of ‘live cinema’ staging allows us inside a character’s head. This time, however, she adds a swashbuckling swagger that befits both Woolf’s wry tone and Berlin’s iconoclastic Schaubühne company, making a welcome return to the Barbican.
