Gerhard Richter: Painting After All

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

Until 5 July 2020

At 88, Richter is not just one of the greatest living painters in the world – he is one of the last remaining Germans to have lived through World War II and remember doing so. This retrospective features over 100 works in various forms, created throughout his long and astonishingly prolific career. Special attention is paid to two series of oil paintings never before shown in America: Cage, painted in 2006 to the avant-garde music of John Cage; and Birkenau, from 2014 – an octogenarian German’s visual attempt to grapple with the legacy of the place better known as Auschwitz.
