Hollywood has turned to horror of late to examine race – after Jordan Peele’s Get Out and Us, Antebellum explores the long trail of trauma left in the wake of America's history of slavery. Pop star-turned-actress Janelle Monáe plays an author trapped in her own attempt to imagine a world in which the South won the Civil War. Stuck as a slave in her own mind, her situation conveys the weight of ancestral pain and the obligation African American artists foster to grapple with racial injustice. It's a rich concept delivered with twitchy unease.
