Samuel Beckett’s exploration of optimism in the face of helplessness sees protagonist Winnie smiling through her routines, despite being half-buried in the sand – with her husband increasingly out of reach. As with many of Beckett’s characters, you hardly know whether to pity or admire their docile acceptance of a world without mercy. No writer has come close to Beckett when it comes to revealing the tragedy of the human condition, and if anyone can take on the gruelling role of Winnie, it’s Academy Award-winner Dianne Wiest.
