Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams

Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams

Victoria and Albert Museum, London
Until 14 July 2019

In February 1947, French fashion designer Christian Dior launched his couture house in Paris. Immediately his figure-flattering dresses, skirts and jackets, with their sloping shoulders, full bust and cinched-in waist above full, long skirts, were dubbed “The New Look” by American Harper’s Bazaar. Princess Margaret, among other socialites on both sides of the channel, fell in love with these elegant and austerity-defying designs. Dior passed away in 1957, but this show – the largest ever to be staged in the UK – highlights his lasting impact on the fashion world.

“There is no other country in the world, besides my own, whose way of life I like so much. I love English traditions, English politeness, English architecture. I even love English cooking.”
