BBE Music just announced their half-off sale for all physical (read:non-MP3) music available at their site.
BBE is a UK-based music collective that includes several artists in what I call the ‘alternative soul’ genre. These artists run the gamut from vocal soul to funky jazz and house grooves. BBE stands for ‘Barely Breaking Even’, which is a testament to their dedication to bringing their listeners a quality listening experience without being solely motivated by commercial success. You might remember one of their artists (Slakah the Beatchild) that I recommended a while back.
So check ‘em out and support these purveyors of real music. I know I definitely need some new tunes for the ’09, so I just finished placing my order. Only wish I didn’t have to wait for it to make its way across the pond….
Speaking of which, all the prices on the site are listed in GBP. So here’s a handy link to help you convert pounds to dollars.
cheers,
k

You may have heard about the recent robbery and murder that took place this week at The Standard – a bar / restaurant on Memorial Drive. I’ve never visited the establishment myself, but as a resident of the neighborhood, the brutal and senseless nature of the murder was a real shock. There’s also been several other burglaries and violent assaults in the area (a.k.a. ‘The Memorial Corridor’) over the past couple of months: a break-in at The Lamplighter, another robbery / shooting of a delivery truck driver, and the mugging of another Standard employee in the bar’s parking lot. While a natural reaction to these acts of crime and violence would be to ‘run and hide’, I’ve been heartened to see that the residents in the surrounding communities have decided to be more proactive, and are rallying with each other to find immediate solutions as well as to demand action and a greater police presence from the City of Atlanta. This is absoultely what I love most about living in this part of town. Yes, it may be a lot less ‘sterile’ than the ‘burbs, but the folks that live here – actually act as neighbors and have a vested interest in making sure that the diversity and vibrance of the area is maintained, without giving in to random acts of crime and violence. One of the groups that have formed as a result of this latest incident is ATACC – Atlantans Together Against Crime and Cutbacks. If you’re interested in finding out more about this group, or getting involved, check out their website. There’s a place to sign up for (infrequent) email updates, as well as options to join the Facebook group to stay in the loop. There will also be a Community Meeting at Aurora Coffee in L5P this Sunday from 3-6 pm. Email melissacoxmckaharay@gmail.com for more details. nos venceremos, k
January 8, 2009 by ksolo Just saw a USA Today article about a special inauguration edition of a Spider Man comic book. Obama and SpiderMan giving each other a ‘fist bump’? Wow. How crazy is that? Furthermore, how crazy is it that I WANT one!? cheers, k
January 6, 2009 by ksolo I’m grooving and working right now to a house mix from one of Atlanta’s premier house DJs – Michael Alan of Sweat. The mix is entitled Jus’ SpeakN and is chock-full of spiritually uplifting tracks and hip-shaking beats, just what I needed to get me back into the post-holiday swing of things. Oh, and I absolutely LOVE the track that comes in around 21:00. Niiice. Check it out for yourself: cheers, k

Do you remember that guy from high school that you went out on a date with once and never called back? Then, years later you run into him and you think, “Wow, so-and-so has really changed. Wonder why we never worked out?” Loca Luna is sort of like that guy for me.
The first experience I had with LL was when it was located on Juniper. All I remembered of the night was that: the parking was terrible, the place was too crowded and seemed a little dark and dank, and the food was…decent. Needless to say, I never returned.
