get in her head – just in time for valentine’s

Alright, fellas. Valentine’s day is fast approaching, and I’ll bet that most of you have no idea what you’re gonna do for the special lady in your life. And don’t give me that lame excuse, “Oh, I don’t celebrate Valentine’s day, it’s just a ploy to have people spend their money on senseless drivel”. Ploy, schmoy. Tell me, how much will you be spending on beer and snacks for the Superbowl this Sunday? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

Listen, even if you’re a conscientious objector to everything that Valentine’s day stands for, you do not want your lady to be the only one in the office or school or whereever sitting there empty-handed while all the other ladies around her are ooohing and aaahing over their flowers, balloons, teddy bears, candy, and romantic plans. Believe me. You don’t want to be that dude. If you are that dude, I have a very strong feeling that the benefit of playing the righteous cheapskate for a day will be summarily trumped by the disadvantage of having a disappointed, dejected female sharing your space for the days that follow. Close your eyes for a moment and fix that image in your head. Not pretty, right?

But…what’s that you say? You have no idea what your lady wants? Still having scary flashbacks from her less-than-loving reaction to the heart-shaped waffle iron you got her last year for Valentine’s day? No worries. Where there’s a web, there’s a way!

what a difference a day makes

It was only a few days ago, but already I can barely remember the cold January morning air. I remember being cold, of course – freezing cold. But that feeling pales in comparison to the memory of the warm glow of anticipation that served as my alarm clock on Obama’s inauguration day, and continued to grow as we made our way onto the streets of Washington, D.C.

The weather forecast predicted that the thermometer would only make it up to about 30 degrees, but the wind chill would make it feel more like 20. Certainly not the kind of weather this Georgia girl is used to hangin’ out in for long periods of time. But I was well prepared. My inauguration day outfit consisted of: long johns (top and bottom), another undershirt for extra insulation, and 2 pairs of socks topped off with a turtleneck sweater and sturdy jeans, and appropriately accessorized with 2 scarves, a pair of gloves and a hat big enough to cover my forehead and ears. It’s a wonder I didn’t pass out from heat exhaustion before I made it outdoors.

At 7:30am, we joined the steadily growing stream of people making their way toward the National Mall. Gloved hands clutched cups of steaming hot coffee or miniature US flags, and faces shone with bright smiles and expectant eyes. The early morning sunlight glinted off of buttons that bore numerous artistic interpretations of the face and name we had all come here for – Obama. Hundreds more renderings of the icon on all manner of keepsake items were on display from vendors already hawking their wares, and other still setting up their booths.

“Getcha Obama t-shirts heeeere! Inauguration t-shirts, folks! One for ten, two for fifteeeeeeen!”
“Lifetime calendars! Lifetime Obama calendars!”
“Inauguration bumper stickers!! I was there, where were you?!!”

One t-shirt design in particular caught my eye as we neared the intersection of 17th and K Streets. On it, MLK lay sleeping, his head resting peacefully on an open Bible. In the dream scene depicted above his head, was a tall, proudly smiling Barack Obama.

It’s gonna be cold, it’s gonna be crazy, it’s gonna be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

I’m expecting hordes of people, hoping for loads of good energy, and prepping myself to exercise extreme patience. But most of all, I’m just looking forward to being in the mix of it all, hitting up some parties, and being a part of this historical moment.

I’ve spent the last couple of days combing the web for events and gatherings that I think will be worth my time and money during the short 3 days I’ll be in D.C.

Here’s the list:

not getting good head?

Lately, I’ve become quite the beer lover. My guy has introduced me to the wonderful world of high-gravity Belgian beer (so named for the

higher-than-normal alchohol content) and craft beers brewed right here in the US. In doing so, he’s also exposed me to a growing cult of beer aficionados who are just as picky and passionate about their brews as wine snobs are about their drink of choice.

The picky side ranges from how to properly pronounce a beer (e.g., Smithwick’s = Smitticks) to how to properly pour one. Believe me, there’s nothing that brings a bigger smile to a beer-o-philes face than a perfectly poured brew, with just the right amount of nose-tickling foam floating on top.

Perusing the web today, I happened across a number of beer tips and tricks, including a helpful video from Chow that shows you how to get a perfect head (or collar) every time.

Wait. What did you think I was talking about?

donate and get a limited edition inaugural poster

This just in from the official Obama Inauguration blog:

We just released a commemorative poster designed by Los Angeles artist Shepard Fairey in honor of President-elect Obama’s Inauguration. It’s now available as a gift for grassroots supporters who donate $20.00 to help make this Inauguration the most inclusive and accessible one in history.

Fairey designed this special image to celebrate President-elect Obama’s Inauguration. It echoes his famous “HOPE” posted, which was ubiquitous during the 2008 presidential campaign. To get the poster, visit www.pic2009.org/poster .

only a few more days…

It’s hard to believe that the moment I (and so very many other people) have been waiting for for so long is almost upon me. There were times when I was certain it would never happen, even though I felt that if I believed hard enough, it actually could.

And now with only a few days separating me from the realization of this long-awaited, historic event, I’m near speechless.

So I’ll just let it speak for itself.
