my thanksgiving staycation – part 1

Filed under dinner and a show

Yes, yes. I know I’ve been silent for a while. I’m just getting back into the groove of things from more than a week on vacation. Actually, staycation, since I didn’t really go anywhere. Originally, I thought I’d spend my time off catching up on writing and making updates to the site, but instead I took the opportunity to detox from my addiction to all things internet, and actually went out and enjoyed my fair city and spent quality time with friends and family.

But now all that’s past, and it’s back to business as usual. But before the daily Marta commute and office shenanigans completely tarnish the glow I gained from over a week spent on the art of doing nothing, I thought I’d relive the high points by sharing them with you.

Shall we?

A Night of Photography at Lit Kitchen
After escaping the plantation and fighting gruesome 400 traffic for over an hour (my pound of flesh paid for a week off, I assumed), I linked up with some friends to catch a photography exhibit at Lit Kitchen. The show featured the works of John Glenn (no, not that one) and Usha Menard. John is an accomplished veteran of Atlanta’s journalism community. Among other pursuits, he served as Assistant Managing Editor for the AJC’s photography department for eight years, is a former President and current Board Member of the Atlanta Press Club, and recently coached journalists in Beijing in preparation for the 2008 Olympic games. A great deal of John’s work as a photographer has been on location at the annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, where he has captured colorful and candid images of some of music’s most notable faces.  Several of those images were on display at the exhibit, including:

Also exhibiting that night was Usha Menard, with several images on display that captured moments from her travels to Morocco, Uganda, Namibia, and Botswana. Her photos are elegantly composed, intriguing snippets of the life, culture, and natural beauty of those faraway places. Here are some of my favorites:

You can see more of John’s work and purchase prints at his website.

And for more of Usha’s work, check out her site.

to be continued….
