oprah unveils new online store

Damn, will this woman ever quit?

Today, Oprah Winfrey launched her new online store – aptly named ‘The Oprah Store’.

The site features lots of Oprah-inspired originals in categories from Baby, to Home Living, to Pets.

Though some of the sections are woefully underpopulated (only 3 items in the Jewelry category? Insert frowny face here), and some items are a bit steep on the price ($100 for a memory album? Yikes!), there’s still enough to please the eye, the wallet, and the soul. Almost all of the products for sale feature the unmistakable ‘O’ insignia, and several are in support of a good cause - like the paper maiche bowls from Wola Nani or the entire section dedicated to Earth-friendly goods.

Here are a few of my faves I found while browsing the site:

trade in your old clothes, save money on new ones!

Just another reason for me to love this store.

Starting tomorrow, Sole Shoes and Accessories - the store I love to hate (or is it the other way around?) – is hosting their bi-annual Clothing Trade In.

Ladies – bring in your gently used winter coats, shoes, and clothing and receive 25% off regularly priced items in the store. Donated items will be given to a local battered women’s shelter.

What better incentive do you need to get your hands on a stylish new coat for the cold season, or slip your feet into some kick-ass boots?

toni morrison releases 9th novel

Toni Morrison has a solid position among the ranks of the the most influential African – American authors of modern times. And if her Nobel and Pulitzer Prizes weren’t enough evidence of that, the fact that our President-elect named her 1977 book, Song of Solomon, as one of his favorites ought to do it.

In every Morrison novel to date (and I’ve read them all) you can be sure you’ll find her unmistakable literary trademarks, namely:

 - rich verbal imagery that’s often so complex and intricately detailed as to leave fans’ heads spinning or to cause casual readers to denouce her works as impossible to follow or understand.

 - intimate, emotionally compelling black folk stories that illuminate a period or place in black history as it was lived, not a condensed version made to fit within a history book, and

 - her effortless blending of everyday life occurences with the supernatural

With all of that to bake into a single tome, I can only imagine that it must take a hell of a lot of crafting and sculpting for Ms. Morrison to come out with a finished work. Each of her 8 previously published novels had a span of no less than 3 years between them, and it’s been about 5 years since she released her last novel, Love.

I write this with tears and my eyes and overwhelming joy in my heart.

Barack Obama is officially the 44th President of the United States.

Yes we believed. Yes we represented. Yes we did.

atlanta election riots – will history repeat itself?

So I was walking back from lunch today with a group of co-workers, and one of them mentioned that she’d heard that various area municipalities were beefing up their security patrols because there might be riots after the election results came in tonight.

At this, I had to quickly choose whether I’d voice my honest opinion of her statement (“why in the hell would you even give voice to such foolishness?”) or just ignore or deflect it with a wry, harmless comment.

Thankfully, our boss piped up with, “Oh, yeah? But the question is: why this election?”

Why, indeed?

Early voting is for suckers.

All of us Johnny-come-latelys know that by voting on November 4, you get the following benefits:

  • keeping the opposite party on pins and needles until you’re good and damned ready (works for dates, too)
  • a chance to listen to those tracks on your iPod you haven’t heard since you loaded them,

and…

  • lots of free stuff
