nanowrimo ’08 – calling all would-be novelists!

October 31, 2008 by
Filed under dinner and a book

Beginning tomorrow, November 1, Nanowrimo 2008 will kick off for experienced and aspiring novelists all around the world.

I know so many people (myself included) who have their in-progress novel that’s been ‘in-progress’ for months or even years.  So many distractions get in the way of actually completing what seems like an insurmountable task - work, family, social obligations, etc.

But once a year, National Novel Writing Month (a.k.a. Nanowrimo) occurs, and spurs people from all over the world to quit procrastinating and knock out a 50,000 word novel in just 30 days. Think of it as a boot camp for novelists.

Think it’s impossible?

If you can average a little over 1,600 words a day (which could take as little as an hour or two), you can do it.

Now, will you have a completed novel polished and ready to put on the shelves at the end of the month? Not likely. The goal of Nanowrimo is simply to get the words on paper (or your hard drive) within the 30 days. After that, you can take as long as you want to craft, refine, sculpt, edit, or otherwise procrastinate, but at least most of the heavy lifting will be done.

Check www.nanowrimo.org for more details and to find writing buddies around Atlanta and in other parts of Georgia and the world. There are even write-ins throughout the month, where other local Nanowrimo participants converge on a library, coffee shop, or restaurant to egg each other on to literary greatness. If you’re interested, check out:

Midnight Kick-Off at Landmark Diner in Buckhead, or check here for other write-in locations around town.

And hey, even if you don’t finish your novel during Nanowrimo ’08…there’s always next year!

write-on,

k
