THE ARTIST: Slakah the Beatchild
THE ALBUM: Soul Movement Vol 1
Released: September 22, 2008
Toronto-based artist, Slakah the Beatchild (a.k.a. Byron Joseph) recently released his first album – Soul Movement 1, which would suggest (thankfully) that we can expect at least another of these in the future.
Slakah’s vocal sound is a cross between Dwele and D’angelo with a sprinkle of Raphael Saadiq, but his lyrics and arrangements are fresh- not simply a rehash of something you’ve heard before. The 20-track album is a mashup of soul and hip-hop: the smooth instrumentation and body-rocking beats conjure up images of old skool skate parties.
While tracks like “Enjoy Yourself” and “What’s This Feeling” showcase Slakah’s singing talents, others like “B-Boy Beef” (one of my faves) and “Butta Fat Vibes” highlight his skills as a rhymer and producer. This one’s got a little something for everyone. Just press play and put it on repeat.
Check out the video for “What’s This Feeling?” Is it just me, or oes it make you think of an old De La Soul video?
cheers,

I just bought this album and I must say, it is an instant classic! Its so rare to find albums you can play front to back and enjoy it all the way through! AND 20 TRACKS AT THAT! Some places you can download get the bonus producer commentary which is interesting too!! This album is must have if you like that REAL soul music a la Raphael Saadiq, J Dilla, Tribe Called Quest!!
