It’s been almost 4 years since the last Saadiq album, ‘Ray Ray’, was released. But when you consider that, since then, he’s lended his creative talents as musician and producer to the likes of : Floetry, Mary J. Blige, The Roots, Earth Wind and Fire, Vikter Duplaix, and John Mellencamp (whew! say that three times real fast), you realize that you only think you haven’t heard from him in a while.
Saadiq was also the driving force behind timeless, real-music tracks like:
Dance Tonight, and
With his latest release, ‘The Way I See It’, he takes timeless to a whole ‘nother level, bringing back the classic Motown sound of the 50s and 60s, along with collaborations with Jay-Z, Joss Stone, and Stevie Wonder.
Raphael Saadiq will perform live in Atlanta on Thursday, October 2 at Sugarhill. Purchase ticktes at Moods Music, Marco’s Pita, and Ticket Alternative.

This isn’t the kind of music you’d expect from a group of Morehouse College students. Or, maybe I’m just out of touch.
Either way, The 54 is worth a listen. With lyrics expressing young man angst layered over intense, head-banging rock tracks, The 54 dares to defy the typical urban boy-band imagery and sound.
Check out their Myspace page to get a sample of their sound, especially the tracks, ‘Anthem’ and ‘Dream II’.
Oh - and, about the group’s name. Remember that tear-jerking scene with Denzel Washington from the movie ‘Glory’?
C’mon…you know you remember:

The International Black DocuFest will take place September 18th – 20th, 2008 at the High Museum of Art’s Walter C. Hill Auditorium. The festival will also highlight Atlanta-based talent; including the Atlanta Premiere of “This Far By Faith: Barbados Centenarians” by award winning director and Atlanta native Cassandra Hollis, an Arts & Activism panel discussion that includes Stic-man of the internationally acclaimed rap duo Dead Prez, and the photojournalism by pop culture photographer Shannon McCollum who has documented the likes of OutKast, Lil John and countless other pop culture giants.

the depot – mediocre meals on memorial

If there’s one thing that Atlanta (and especially my part of town) has enough of, it’s ho-hum restaurant experiences. You know the kind: looks nice enough from the outside, always has a decent crowd, menu seems interesting enough. But when you actually pay a visit, the execution on the promise falls flat.Such is my assessment of The Depot – a train-station-turned-restaurant on Memorial Drive. My friend Kali and I stopped there one weekend afternoon after we’d worked up an appetite window-shopping in nearby East Atlanta Village.
