2 weeks notice

boss_pinkslip.jpgI pretty much began to consider leaving my job, oh…about 26 minutes after I started working here. But I decided that it’d be better to stick it out and see what I could get out of the place before I made my resume look like I have ADD. Anyway, a recent series of fortunate events have opened up an opportunity for me to work in (what I hope will be) greener pastures, so I’ve finally made the decision to switch plantat…er, i mean jump ship.

The problem with the whole 2-week notice thing is that once you let everyone know that you’re a short-timer, you’re immediately seized by this listless, languorous feeling that is a direct side effect of knowing that you’re no longer on the hook to perform, just to show up. Maybe it’s just me, but it’s awfully hard to keep up the façade of being a hard worker, when you know nobody cares anyway.

Well, tomorrow is officially my last day, so on this, the eve of my departure, I’ve decided to take some time to reflect on the last 10 days . Read: I’ve pretty much run out of other ways to goof off. :-D

When one door closes…

We wrestle not against flesh and blood but against spirits and principalities.Ephesians 6:12 (paraphrased)

Recently my pastor has been teaching on ‘breaches’, which he’s defined as a sort of spiritual door that is opened or closed based on an individual’s actions and choices.
As I understand it, a breach is analogous to spiritual cause and effect. With each thought, choice, or action you make, you create an environment that either welcomes in or shuts out a certain spiritual energy or principle that corresponds with that thought, choice, or action.

Lauded among independent and avant-garde theater buffs as one of the great American films of all time, Killer of Sheep is finally being released on the small screen. Turner Classic Movies will air the film and 4 other shorts from director Charles Burnett on MLK day – Monday, Jan. 21 – at 8pm.

I’ve never seen the movie, but I’ve heard great things, and the clip below has me waiting with bated breath. As a matter of fact, I’m going to go set my DVR right now ;-) .

scoop central – 2008 presidential candidates

pick your poison

So I admitted in an earlier post that I really don’t follow politics, right? Well, this is largely due to the fact that I am an avid practitioner of selective ignorance – I purposely block or filter the glut of information pumped out by most mass media outlets. I don’t read the newspaper or any news magazines, and I very rarely watch television (and I can be pretty horrible w/email and voicemail too, but that’s another story). My primary news sources are NPR and the few Internet news headlines I subscribe to on my home page. Under normal conditions, these sources are sufficient for me, but given that it’s an election year, I’ve been feeling a little under-informed lately.

I don’t want to be the person that supports a particular candidate solely on the basis of race or gender, but I also don’t have the time (or frankly, the desire) to try and catch every debate or news show featuring one or more of the candidates. So what’s a girl to do?

Thankfully one of my internet buddies posted this link from the Washington Post yesterday. It features very in-depth profiles of each of the frontrunners, but my favorite was the ‘Choose Your Candidate’ quiz that presents you with candidates’ positions on crucial issues. During the quiz, you select the stance you most agree with, without having any idea which candidate said stance belongs to. Once you’ve selected, then you can see which horse you backed.

So, while I may not have time for news, I certainly have time for surfing and playing games on the internet….

That was a joke.

Well, kinda.

the spot – food for the soul

food for the soul

The sign outside reads, ‘Fish Fry Every Day’ – a more convincing advertisement simply isn’t needed. I pull my trusty steed over and enter The Spot – a little-known neighborhood eatery on Ralph McGill. Inside, there are maybe half a dozen tables, and several stools nestled around an L-shaped lunch-counter style bar. To the right of the bar is a handwritten menu consisting of about 6 main dishes and a handful of sides – none of which is more than $8. I’m greeted familiarly by an auntie with dreads, and an older gentleman with smiling eyes and a sporty demeanor.

the anti-resolution resolution

anti-resolution

I hate New Year’s resolutions. The very idea of making them just seems like a setup for future self-deprecation and disappointment. I mean honestly, have you ever made a resolution that you’ve actually kept or even remembered for more than 90 days after you made it? And even if you did remember it, it was probably only because you realized that you never kept it to begin with…which them prompted you to engage in all sorts of masochistic internal brow-beating about how you never accomplish anything you set out to do. Hey, if masochism is your thing, I’m not knocking it, but I personally don’t need another thing to make me feel like more of a procrastinating underachiever than I already am. So I’ve spared myself from becoming the victim of champagne-induced delusions of grandeur by deciding not to make a single resolution for 2008.
